Schedule a class session with Special Collections and University Archives

What can Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) offer your students? Working with archival materials and rare books gives students from a range of disciplines opportunities to engage in critical thinking, analyze multiple perspectives, and synthesize information from a variety of sources. 

Examples of recent sessions include: 

  • Journalism students learning how to analyze and use historical primary sources to write about a media-related event in Iowa State history 
  • Rhetoric students evaluating the rhetorical strategies used by creators of historical food- and agriculture-related documents 
  • Architecture students exploring the creation of taxonomies using rare books and archival collections to understand the classification of architectural types  
  • Typography students interpreting the typographical elements in rare books to articulate how they communicate content and guide the reader through the text 
  • Family and Consumer Sciences Education students learning how to conduct archival research in order to understand their field’s history and incorporate historical primary sources into their research
