Library expands Open Access publishing opportunities

Publishing journal articles Open Access supports ISU’s mission to “create, share, and apply knowledge to make our students, Iowa, and the world better”. One way the University Library helps to make ISU knowledge available to our students, Iowa, and the world, is to enter into open access agreements with publishers, to pay the article processing charges (APCs) that some journals charge authors to make their articles immediately open access.

The agreements are listed on the Publish Open Access page.  Starting this month, January 2025, we’re adding agreements with two new publishers: the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

ACS

  • Each calendar year, the University Library will pay the fees for 47 open access articles with ISU corresponding authors, approximately half our expected annual publishing.
  • Open Access publishing under the new agreement will be limited to one article per ISU corresponding authors.
  • It allows publishing in all hybrid ACS journals (i.e., all journals on this list without an “Open Access” indicator).
  • Corresponding author must select Iowa State University as their affiliation at submission.
  • Check Publish Open Access to see if allotment has been exceeded and for information about other ways to publish open access.

ASME

  • The University Library will pay the fees for ASME journal articles with ISU contributing authors.
