Cyclone Support Central offers hub for student programming, wellness in Parks Library

Author: Jenni Diaz Garcia

Cyclone Support Central

Cyclone Support Central, on the main level of Parks Library, is home to a collaboration between the Division of Student Affairs' Cyclone Support initiative and the University Library. The venue provides flexible programming space and drop-in wellness activities. This semester Cyclone Support Central is hosting flu shot clinics, free haircut clinics, and Wellness Wednesdays led by Student Health and Wellness.

The collaboration that launched Cyclone Support Central began in the fall of 2023, when Student Health and Wellness approached University Library leadership with an idea to establish a consistent space for wellness and mindfulness programming. Conversations evolved into a holistic approach to supporting students in alignment with Student Affairs’ Cyclone Support initiative. The central location in Parks Library, Room 140, features a versatile programing area, two conversation pods, and drop-in wellness activities.

Flu Shot Clinics
Flu shots are available for students at Cyclone Support Central on Oct. 15 from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and on Oct. 29 from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Students should bring their red ISU ID and insurance card.

Free Haircut Clinics
In collaboration with ClipDart, free haircuts will be offered to students from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Oct. 22 and Nov. 8. All appointments are currently booked. Walk-ins may be accommodated if space allows. ClipDart barbers and stylists specialize in textured hair but they will cut and style all hair types. All students are welcome. Costs for the haircut events with ClipDart are being shared by Student Health and Wellness, Multicultural Student Affairs, First Scholars program and TRIO Student Support Services, with in-kind support from University Library.

Wellness Wednesdays
Wellness Wednesdays will be available on Oct. 30, Nov. 6, Nov. 13, and Nov. 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to help members of the campus community prioritize mental health. Students can play, practice mindfulness, and relax through uplifting activities that may include:
    •    Legos, coloring books, and puzzles.
    •    Meditation, reflections, gratitude journaling, and goal setting.
    •    Yoga, light therapy, breathing exercises, audio experiences, and aroma therapy.
    •    For updates on specific activities, contact Melanie Reed at melareed@iastate.edu.
